As our history indicates, Jack was one of the founding members of the Betsy Layne Volunteer Fire Dept. orignally serving on the Betsy Layne Men's Club. Even after the club was officially ended in the mid 70's, Jack stayed on as a firefighter well into the late 1970's.

He became a Level I certified firefighter on December 1st, 1976, and later was recognized by the state fire commission as a Level II certified firefighter on January 1st, 1992.

He served as a corporal with the United States Marines during World War II.

He was chairman of the Betsy Layne Men's Club for several years and also a devoted husband to his wife, Margaret, and children which included former firefighters Bobby and Steve Branham, who each spent several years with our department. Jack's father, Jack Branham Sr., was also a member of the old Betsy Layne Men's Club as early as 1955.

Mr. Branham was a devoted member of the Vogel-Day United Methodist Church and, in 1980, was awarded a lifetime membership to the Betsy Layne Fire Dept. having accumulated 451 fire training hours.

Jack passed away on March 16th, 2000, and, at his request, the Betsy Layne Fire Dept. honor guard was called upon to be his pallbearers. He was laid to rest at the Davidson Memorial Gardens cemetery at Ivel.

Records indicate that Woodrow Woody Conn served as a Betsy Layne firefighter as early as 1979.

He and his wife, Ruby, lived at Betsy Layne and were both devoted members of the Vogel-Day United Methodist Church at Harold.

After his firefighting days were over, Woody was one of the first appointments to our newly-established fire protection district board of trustees in 1984 during which time he saw many new improvements to our department. He often joked that people would mistake him as the late actor Carroll O'Connor and Woody always had a smile on his face.

He lost the love of his life, Ruby, in early 1993 and, shortly thereafter on October 8th, Woody also passed away. Seven Betsy Layne firefighters were honored with serving as his pallbearers. Mr. Conn was laid to rest at the Davidson Memorial Gardens cemetery at Ivel.
