Although Mr. Hammonds was never a member of the old men's club or the fire department, his memory will remain on in the lives of all of us who were involved on that fateful day when he lost his life in a house fire at his Ivel residence.

It was not that he was the first person to perish in a house fire in our fire district for some nearly 50 years but he will be remembered for his kind generosity and infinite wisdom as he taught so many of us in our school years.

During World War II, Mr. Hammond had served with the United States Army.

Please see one of the firefighter's accounts of that tragic, January morning in our File Library.William "Bill" Hammonds
